SCHOOL CALENDAR: The school operates on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9:15 to 11:45 AM and 12:30 to 3:00 PM. School opens in September, and follows the calendar found on the last page of this booklet, which is based primarily on the Brewster Central School District calendar. In the event Brewster Public Schools close, our school will also be cancelled. In the event of a 2 hour delay, we will usually remain open, however, each class will have an emergency phone chain to notify all class members in the event of closings or delays. There may also be announcements on the radio of these changes. NEWS AND NOTICES: Our school will be sending newsletters and other notices home during the year. Please read these CAREFULLY, as many important items will be mentioned. Notices will also be posted at the school from time to time. REMOVAL FROM SCHOOL: If you intend to withdraw your child from school, please notify the treasurer IN WRITING two weeks before the withdrawal date. GUESTS: The teacher’s permission must be obtained before bringing guests to class. DAILY SCHEDULE:
TRANSPORTATION: Due to the limited parking facilities, parents are urged to form car pools. Sign-up sheets will be available for those who wish to form car pools, but the arrangements must be made by the parents, not the school. Teachers MUST be informed in writing if a child is being picked up by someone other than the parent or regular car pool driver. A child will not be released to people unknown to the teacher without parental consent. If there is anyone that you do not wish to have pick up your child, please let the teacher know. No child will be permitted to walk home without a parent. FUN ACTIVITIES:
Parents will be notified in advance of our field trips. Only with the cooperation and assistance of parents driving and chaperoning are these trips possible. When teachers ask you to drive, please be prepared to help. Car seats for children under 4 years old, and seat belts for those 4 and over (as required by NY State Law) are mandatory when children are taken on field trips. For insurance purposes, no sibling or friends will be allowed on our field trips. DRESS: Please, please, please put names on ALL clothing!! Because we have lots of physical and “hands-on” activities, we encourage the children to wear play clothes. We discourage “party shoes” and sandals for girls, because these shoes are slippery and hard to play in. SNACK: Out of concern for your child’s health, we ask that you bring nutritional snacks on your day to help. Sugary snacks, such as sweet cookies and juice drinks (such as Hi-C) provide only empty calories and contribute little to the children’s nutrition, as well as adding to possible tooth decay. Here are some snack suggestions:
EMERGENCIES: Emergencies will be handled in accordance with the information supplied by parents on the Emergency Card on file at the school. IMMUNIZATION FORMS: New York State mandates that an immunization form be signed by a physician and be on file for each child. ALL IMMUNIZATIONS MUST BE COMPLETED BY THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL. NO CHILD WILL BE ALLOWED IN SCHOOL WITHOUT IMMUNIZATIONS. PARENT-TEACHER RELATIONS: You are encouraged to call your child’s teacher at home or at school if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s progress at school. If you call the school, we ask that you call before, after or between morning and afternoon sessions. Please do not call from 9:15-11:45 or 12:30-3:00 unless it is an emergency. Teachers will schedule parent-teacher conferences in February. Other conferences may be scheduled at the parents’ or teacher’s request. Such conferences are important and confidential, therefore, we ask that you telephone the teacher involved to arrange a meeting time, other than during class time. We hope these conferences will present a realistic and informative picture of how your child is progressing in the nursery school program. GENERAL RULES: Children may not chew gum at school. Toy weapons, such as guns and swords are NOT allowed! Please monitor what your child brings to school. It is VERY difficult for our teachers to keep track of extra toys, etc. and when things become lost or broken, it is very upsetting to the child! HELPING PARENT: We are a COOPERATIVE nursery school. By assisting the teachers and taking your turn in the classroom, you avoid the necessity of hiring extra teachers, which often leads to raising the tuition. Your cooperation is essential!!! Parents will receive calendars throughout the year indicating holidays and the helping parent scheduled for each day. Our first concern is for the safety and comfort of the children. Therefore, on occasion the teachers and staff find it necessary to have additional helping parents in the classroom and will schedule accordingly. Helping parent calendars should not be discarded until the next one is received and the new month has begun!! Helping parents do not need to be mothers-- the children love to have helping fathers, grandmas or grandpas, etc! * * * IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT THE SCHEDULED PARENT BE PRESENT ON HIS/HER DAY, OR HAVE A SUBSTITUTE PRESENT. For the safety of the children, it is necessary to have an assistant in the classroom to help the teacher. You may exchange turns with another parent or select a substitute from the list that is provided, if you cannot come in on your assigned day. It is your responsibility to find a substitute and to NOTIFY THE TEACHER of all changes. You may either provide the snack for the class and pay the substitute $10.00, or pay the substitute $16.00 and ask that person to supply the snack. Siblings are NOT allowed to attend class on your helping day!! This is a special day for your nursery school child and the teacher needs your help, also!! |
